On February 25-28, Prof. Dr. Wadir Safi, AJO VP, participated and presented in a panel discussion on “Deeper Integration for Peace and Prosperity in the South Asian Region” in Katmandu, Nepal. The Regional Conference was organized by the Center for South Asian Studies (CSAS) in cooperation with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.
Participants included members from the Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks (COSATT) from all the eight SAARC member countries.
Dr. Safi in his speech discussed a deeper integration of SAARC member states not only the government level but on the people to people level. There is a renewed hope about the peace talk between Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said, and that support from all SAARC members will benefit the South Asia. He encouraged further engagement between civil societies of SAARC countries, but caution on the sustainability aspect of this engagement. “We really need to educate our respective people and garner the support of our leaders to be agents of change and not leave today’s problems to posterity”, Dr. Safi said.
